Conclusion
G-RINN was permitted for the first time 20/12/2000.
Jim at Mainair asked me if I would do it again. The answer is an unequivocal yes. I enjoyed the build almost as much as flying it, and I certainly know more what to look for on the pre-flight.
There were only minor niggles on the build which were all overcome quickly and efficiently. Mainair were quick to answer any questions I had. At times I felt as if I was being a pain, but I certainly wasn't made to feel that way.
What now: Well I originally ordered the kit with the intention of fitting the new large single tank that Mainair have been designing. This overcomes the two tank and in flight switchover. However they have had problems which has delayed the production but is due soon. The tank will be approx 55 litres and will not need removing for derigging. A new skirt will be needed to accommodate it. I will post pictures when I have one installed.
Flying. Well the wings is still tight and it floats on more because of that, and is still a little heavy in roll compared to my Rapier which had a Blade wing of 100 hours. I have the wing set on the middle setting, which gives trim of 55-61 mph. At 61 mph, one up of 90kg it gives 9.5 litres per hour, although I expect that to rise a little come summer. Climb out at full power is 29 litres per hour and in excess of 1200 fpm. Can't go too far at the moment as I only have the one 22 litre tank that Mainair have loaned me until the new tank is ready. I will be moving the wing to the forward setting when I get to fly next so I'll see how it responds then.
If your looking for a new flexi, and fancy the idea of building it yourself then I can't recommend Mainair highly enough. To reiterate what I said in the beginning I have no connection with Mainair, and have received no incentive or payment for this site. I only wanted to share the build with others. If the information I have presented can be of any help to other builders then at least it has been of some use.
Remember the information contained on this site are my personal experiences and in no way are they sanctioned or approved by Mainair. I am not a qualified aircraft technician, and the final responsibility for safety and quality rests with the kit builder and pilot.
I shall include more sections soon on the modifications I have made to stock. These include radio/intercom/strobes and fuel flow sensor and will include copies of the paperwork that was sent to the BMAA. As of 18/03/2001 I am waiting for the mods to be approved and once they are I will post them.
If you need questions answering or a picture of something that isn't covered then I probably already have it on disc so just drop me an email.
Here's wishing for good air...

PS. Why G-RINN. Well I always land with a grin on my face so it seemed appropriate...
