Electrics

Now all the mechanical bits are done it is time to wire everything up. Mainair provide a junction box near the engine to provide easy connect for sensors etc. They also provide a 12 core screened cable that then routes along the skirt to the panel.

Since I had chosen to use the Engine Information System, EIS, from Grand River Technologies in the states then the suggested wiring was not going to work.

The spec. I ordered for the EIS was:

EGT * 2, CHT * 2, Water Temp, RPM, Volts, Outside Air Temp, Fuel Flow Sensor, twin alarm indicator, audio alarm. The EIS also comes with time elapsed and total time functions. I also ordered the EIS with external cold junction compensation so I could use normal wire interconnect from the sensors to the unit.

After some thought I worked out a wiring scheme that would allow me to use the 12 core screened cable from Mainair for all the sensors connections to the EIS. GRINN_EIS_Patch_Lead.xls

All the wiring was double and sometimes treble insulated using heat and solvent retardant covering. All connections were soldered and glue heatshrink covered to maintain mechanical strength and keep out the elements. Quick car type connections were not an option! All power to the front panel is fed from the engine bay, and not the battery despite it being near the front panel. An earth was taken from the regulator to the front panel to provide power return, and the power feed to the starter switch was used to also provide main power at the front panel. A distribution power block was used mounted on a bracket behind the panel for power to all electrical subsystems.
